Gents,
Anyone here with some experience on the AM and Ringmod ?
Is it possible to get sounds out of it like the CS-80 ringmod ?
What would be good settings for the AM to records some FX samples ? Been tinkering around a bit but can't get lush ringmod , it sound buzzy and distorted, I'm probably missing the ideal setting here. Would be good to have more info on this in the manual with some examples too.
thx

Re: AM/Ringmod help
Isn’t the CS-80 ring mod just using the straight sine waves out of the oscillator block? How do you have the settings for the AM section?
Re: AM/Ringmod help
I'm able to get convincing CS-80 type ring mod effects out of my Solaris - using the envelopes to modulate speed & depth. It sounds really cool and expressive. I forget the settings offhand - I'll have to check but it was fairly straight forward.
The only issue I remember having is that the CS-80 utilizes one main lfo for the ring mod and the Solaris has multiple lfos per voice making the syncing of the lfos an issue (if you set the lfos to reset on key press and play a chord it works like the CS-80).

I’d be very grateful if you could check this.
Would even add it in the manual, it’s another great selling point
Was reading an article in SOS the other day on how modern synths reset their lfo’s upon note release or note on. Is this something that can be switched off on the Solaris ?
Example below on the peak and it sounds wonderful.
11:30 , very funny too

Yes! The Solaris has individual LFO's for each voice that can be set to free running or reset to a specific phase via note on. The LFO's parameters can also be modulated by other LFO's or other control sources.bennethos wrote: Sat Sep 19, 2020 12:51 am Was reading an article in SOS the other day on how modern synths reset their lfo’s upon note release or note on. Re: AM/Ringmod help
So, there’s a button for each LFO labeled Retrigger. When this is switched On, a note-on event will reset that LFO to the current phase position that is selected. It does not reset for note-offs.
On the Solaris, the normal situation (with Retrigger off) is just as the video you linked is showing, and it’s one of my main ideas why I wanted to have the PolyMod section in the Prophet 5 so long ago. For the Solaris factory presets, in my bank 0 sounds, Program 1 is based on that effect.

Re: AM/Ringmod help
thx for the feedback concerning the lfo's, would be grateful if someone could give a bit more info on how to create the lush ring-mod sounds settings wise (or share a patch and some instructions)
little bonus below :
here is the SOS article fyi concerning emulating vintage sound : https://www.soundonsound.com/techniques ... age-sounds
Another great one on modeling imperfections : http://www.voicecomponentmodeling.com/vcm.aspx

Re: AM/Ringmod help
Attached is a file with three audio examples of the Solaris Ring mod with a space between each https://soundcloud.com/johhnyg/solaris-ring-modthx for the feedback concerning the lfo's, would be grateful if someone could give a bit more info on how to create the lush ring-mod sounds settings wise (or share a patch and some instructions)
Example:
1 - I manually modulate the ring mod with the Joy Stick for speed and use the Mod Wheel for depth.
2- I set this up like the CS-80. I used a mono LFO modulated by an Envelope (for speed) and mono Envelope (for depth) from my Moog Matriarch as EXT1 and EXT2 inputs to the Solaris to modulate the ring mod. The LFO and Envelope trigger when a key is pressed but not when other keys are being held - like the CS-80.
3 - i used free running per voice LFOs to trigger the ring mod - like your example video.
Ignore the playing - and I overstated the effect - it's just for a quick example!
Is this the sound you were looking for?
John
Re: AM/Ringmod help
First I'd like to thank you John for taking the effort in explaining and recording this. I will definitely try and reproduce this experiment here although I don't have a matriarch (which is stereo if im not mistaken) I can probably reproduce it with another synth (my DS Pro2).
the exact sound I'm looking for :
Pulstar starting starting at 5:08
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaMBmBeNvtM
Dragon Vangelis : right at the start and a bit further up
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDL0fbGgG6g
Am I confusing this cave like hollowish woosh sound with a ringmod and it isnt a ringmod ?
PS : where can I get to know the CS-80 inside out like you John ? CS-80v Arturia manual ? thx

Re: AM/Ringmod help
Hi - you don't need to use an external synth to recreate ring mod sounds - only if you are trying to strictly create the monophonic response of re-triggering the CS-80 as in my examples. My example was something like Eddie Jobson from the band UK / album UK would do with his CS-80.
You are looking for metallic sounds. In that case you can just increase the frequency.
I've create another quick example - https://soundcloud.com/johhnyg/solaris-ring-mod-ver-2
Here is a great video on the CS-80 Ring Mod. All of these sounds are easily reproducible on the Solaris without external synths.
